What is Medical Sociology?

Medical Sociology is a sub-field within sociology that examines the social organization of medicine and the impact of social activity and circumstances on health and illness. Medical sociologists investigate (among other things) the social functions of health institutions and organizations, the types of social behavior that distinguish health care professionals and consumers, and identifies the consequences of particular social behaviors on physical and mental health. Delineation exists in the field between the application of sociological concepts to medicine, the sociological study of health and illness, and the sociological study of medicine and health care as a profession. The latter two are the predominant interests within the sociology of medicine, as the first is generally considered to be more a part of the medical than sociological arena.
